Headaches

Causes & Symptoms of Headaches

The most common types of headaches include tension headaches, which feel like band-like tension around the head, and migraine headaches, which often result in pain in one side of the head accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to sound or lights.

Occasional primary headaches (not symptomatic of underlying disease) can be caused by lifestyle choices (sleeping, drinking, and eating habits). However, there are a wide variety of factors that can result in secondary headaches, which can be symptomatic of larger underlying issues.

Conditions that can cause severe headaches include:

  • Acute sinusitis
  • Allergies
  • Aneurysm
  • Brain tumor
  • Concussions
  • Dehydration
  • Ear infections
  • Encephalitis
  • Glaucoma (eye strain)
  • Medications
  • Sinus headaches
  • Stress
